JACKSON, Miss. — Federal authorities arrested 13 people Tuesday morning in a multi-state drug takedown following an 18-month investigation into a trafficking ring operating from Texas to Georgia.
The operation, led by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, targeted a group accused of using commercial trucking routes along Interstate 20 to move large quantities of methamphetamine and fentanyl. Investigators executed 22 search warrants and seized more than $1.4 million in cash, three kilograms of fentanyl and several firearms.
“This organization has been poisoning communities across our country, and today that stops,” DEA spokesperson Carla Newman said in a statement announcing the arrests. The agency worked with local police departments in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia to dismantle the network, which investigators say helped funnel dangerous synthetic opioids from the border region.
Authorities identified 34-year-old Raymond “Rick” Moreno of Houston as the suspected ringleader. Prosecutors said Moreno coordinated shipments from the Texas-Mexico border to distribution hubs in Mississippi and Georgia. The Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics assisted in the operation, which included four arrests in Jackson.
“These kinds of interstate operations are highly organized and extremely dangerous,” Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics Director John Alvarez said. “Removing these individuals from our streets is a major win for public safety.” Alvarez emphasized the importance of collaboration between state and federal agencies to disrupt large-scale drug trafficking.
All 13 suspects face federal drug conspiracy charges and are expected to appear in court later this week. If convicted, several could face decades in prison. Federal officials said the investigation remains active and additional arrests are possible as authorities continue gathering evidence.
